The Crit #23: Lise Vester

How do designers feel about their work when asked to look over their back catalogue? Which past designs do they still stand by, and which now provoke feelings of regret? The Crit, a podcast by Disegno, has the answers!

Each fortnight, Disegno’s editor-in-chief Oli Stratford invites a leading designer to Kef Music Gallery to review their own work. Our guest reveals what worked best; what failed; what pushed their career to new heights; what feedback most shaped their practice; and what they feel needs to be redesigned.

At the end of each episode, to complete their crit, they’ll be asked to give themselves a grade for their career to date: fail, pass, commendation or distinction.

It’s a design-school crit, delivered every fortnight! Subscribe to the show here, or sign up wherever you get your podcasts from.

Our twenty-third guest on The Crit is Lise Vester, accompanied by show host Oli Stratford.

Episode #23: Lise Vester

Lise Vester is a Danish designer working across furniture, lighting and objects, whose work focuses on how sensory and aesthetic experiences can improve wellbeing.

Vester has been shortlisted for numerous emerging designer awards, and this year collaborated with leading Danish design brand Muuto during 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen to create a wavy bench designed to encourage sky gazing.

During her undergraduate degree Vester collaborated with a Danish hospice to create tactile products designed to stimulate the senses of bedridden patients, an experience which later informed her graduate project for the Design Products MA at London’s Royal College of Art, which played with reflection and daylight to create objects which changed users’ perspectives and brought them closer to nature.

From a floor lamp designed to imitate the streaks of cirrus clouds to a neon chandelier designed to mimic the glow of the Northern Lights, Vester creates sculptural pieces that are closely attuned to the atmosphere they create.

In this episode, Vester visits the studio to talk about the importance of neuroaesthetics in her work, drawing inspiration from CBT therapy, and designing for hospice patients.
