Designing the Canon(s)
Who gets left out of the story of contemporary design? Whose legacy resonates and why? And how can design’s past speak to a generation of designers who are taking the discipline in new and increasingly varied directions?
These questions and more will come under the microscope at “Designing the Canon(s)”, a panel discussion hosted by Aram and Disegno on Wednesday 1 November. The evening will consider the impact of legacy in design, and how the field can grapple productively with its own history.
The panel discussion will feature Danah Abdulla, a designer, researcher, and one of the founding members of Decolonising Design; Natsai Audrey Chieza, a designer who founded the biodesign lab Faber Futures and lifestyle brand Normal Phenomena of Life; Ilse Crawford, a designer and educator whose Studioilse practice restored Alvar and Aino Aalto’s Ravintola Savoy restaurant in 2020; and Philippe Garner, a visual artist and expert in 20th-century design and decorative arts who is also the author of Eileen Gray: Design and Architecture, 1878-1976. The event will be moderated by Disegno’s editor-in-chief, Oli Stratford.
