Disegno at LDF

We’re going to have a ball (image: Fabian Frinzel).

London Design Festival (LDF) 2022 is taking over the UK capital from 17 to 25 September, with events being held all over the city to celebrate and promote the city’s creatives.

Throughout the week, the Disegno team will be bringing you news and opinion from across the festival. We’re also organising a series of events, panel discussions and parties, which we’ve helpfully itemised below. So scroll down with your diary at the ready to plan your week – and don’t forget to RSVP.

Make Yourself at Home

You may have to step out of your home to visit the Brompton Design District for LDF, but you won’t need to stop thinking about it thanks to a lineup of discussions based around different aspects of the domestic, from the physical to the emotional.

The Green Home

A panel discussion exploring the historical and contemporary role that plants have played in domestic interiors and design’s relationship with different forms of plant life.

Saturday 17 September, 11:30am

Gallery one, Cromwell Place, London SW7 2JE

Homes Away from Home

Private homes are not the only spaces in which we may experience a sense of belonging or security: unheralded public spaces can also become sites in which identities are shaped and communities formed. In this talk, we explore how unheralded community infrastructure can provide design inspiration.

Thursday 22 September, 4pm

The Wing gallery, Cromwell Place, London SW7 2JE

The Home Uploaded

Traditional ideas of the home have been grounded in the physical: these are private havens, built around ideas of comfort, protection and familiarity. Yet with the rise of connected technologies embedding online services within physical spaces, and the advent of the metaverse extending our lives into myriad virtual realities, what happens to the traditional idea of the home and how will domesticity survive being copy/pasted into a new digital terrain?

Domesticating the Digital

Our lives crisscross physical and digital space, with hard barriers between these two worlds having long since broken down. But while many physical spaces aim to provide comfort and support to their users, this same ethic of care has not been apparent within the design of our apps and digital platforms.

Amidst a world of data capture, dark patterns and online advertising, could new digital design strategies be employed to create kinder, less commodified virtual experiences? Our panel of experts, hosted by Disegno editor-in-chief Oli Stratford, will explore these questions and more at the Rimadesio showroom.

Wednesday 21 September, 6.30pm

Rimadesio, 85 Wigmore St, W1U 1DL

Neuroaesthetic Space

The nascent field of neuroaesthetics explores how physical spaces and objects shape our behaviour and emotions, but what does this mean for design practitioners?

Join Disegno for a talk exploring how emerging research may help to sharpen contemporary practice. On the panel are Augustin Scott de Martinville of Big-Game Studio; Rebecca Chamberlain, course director of MSc Psychology of the Arts, Neuroaesthetics & Creativity at Goldsmiths and Line Brockmann Juhl, the CMO of Muuto.

Tuesday 20 September, 11am

Muuto Space, 28 St John's Sq, EC1M 4DN
