Disegno #35

The cover of Disegno #35.

The bleat of lambs; daffodils budding in the field; the sound of long-form design journalism crashing through the letterbox and landing wodge-like on your doormat. These are the sounds of spring.

We are proud to announce the arrival of our spring 2023 edition: Disegno #35. The new edition launches during Milan Design Week on 17 April, but is already available to pre-order through our online shop.

‘Economies of Objects’, Disegno #35.

The new issue focuses on different elements of the design process, with stories that each explore different processes through which designers interact with the world around them as part of their practice.

Jareh Das and Ọlájídé Ayẹni meet with the Lagos-based designer Nifemi Marcus Bello, and examine how his philosophy surrounding unauthored West African design provides a new framework for thinking about the discipline.

‘Design is Happening’, Disegno #35.

Front opens its archive to Lara Chapman, providing a deep dive into the way in which the studio’s freeform exploration of Sweden’s forests is shaping its development of new forms of design.

Chris Hildrey of ProxyAddress explains how design can aid with the distribution of resources for the homeless, in a piece in which writer George Kafka explores the varied functions of addresses in contemporary society.

Oli Stratford and Donald Milne delve into the world of construction, and investigate new projects from Kenoteq, Local Works Studio, Carmody Groarke and StoneCycling to design bricks from construction waste.

‘Aggregate: A Composite Account’, Disegno #35.

Studio Raw Material invites Evi Hall and Eshwarya Grover to their studio in Makrana, where they have been examining the significance to the landscape of marble, and how uses of this material differ between geographic contexts.

India Block and Sha Ribeiro learn from the pilot of Citibin’s containerisation scheme to design out rats – a scheme that fits into the context of New York’s long-running efforts to eliminate rodents from the city’s day-to-day life.

Fabien Cappello shares his collaboration with the hojalata maestros of Guadalajara, in a piece in which Michael Snyder and Rodrigo Alvarez examine the history of Mexico’s neighbourhood tinplate production.

‘Rat Wars’, Disegno #35.

Claude Dutson and Ramak Fazel share research into the secretive campuses of Silicon Valley, examining how Big Tech’s tools of surveillance can be reconstructed to become a new form of architectural research

Environmental uncertainty provides instructive feedback for the operating practices of cultural spaces in Tiiu Meiner and Hollie Fuller’s exploration of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen’s climate control system.

And we are also proud to share U.F.O.G.O., a new publication included in Disegno #35 that was created in collaboration with ECAL and which explores eight speculative designs for wind turbines that could be installed on Fogo Island off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Disegno #35 comes out in print on 17 April 2023, and is available to order now.
