Disegno #33

The cover of Disegno #33.

One swallow may not a summer make, but combine that swallow with a copy of the new summer edition of Disegno, The Quarterly Journal of Design, and that’s probably sufficient to declare the season open.

Disegno #33 comes out in print on 6 June 2022, the day before the opening of this year’s Salone del Mobile, and is full of summer vibes and superb design stories – all available to order now.

The new issue of the journal is rich in essays, photography, interviews and reports, tackling design projects from around the world. Exploring curatorial practice, industrial manufacturing and design’s sociopolitical implications, it is essential reading for anybody who believes that design matters to the world at large.

The new issue sees Georgina Johnson and Kane Hulse stop by Yinka Ilori’s new Acton studio, co-designed with Sam Jacob, to talk about the importance of joy and positivity to design, and the importance of giving people flowers today, not tomorrow.

Oli Stratford and Rasmus Norlander explore Switzerland’s Christenguss foundry, where designers Moriz Schmid and Ville Kokkonen have utilised 3D-printed sand moulds to expand the history of Swiss aluminium furniture.

Zara Arshad visits FUTURES at the Smithsonian Institution, asking a series of questions about how design frames the possible, and who gets left out from the futures we design.

Brian Hioe and Tei Koukei try out OMA’s Taipei Performing Arts Centre during its beta testing phase, and examine how statement cultural institutions have traditionally played out in Taiwanese politics.

Lara Chapman digs beneath the surface of design and unearths why so many practitioners have begun to explore fossil forms within their work.

Evi Hall and Laurence Kubski stop by the Vitra Design Museum’s Schaudepot for a glimpse of Sabine Marcelis re-curating the museum’s permanent collection according to colour.

India Block and Theresa Marx assemble the members of Eva Feldkamp’s All in Awe design collective for a conversation about altruism in practice and the value of the discipline to not-for-profits and charities.

And Joe Lloyd tunes into Industrial Facility’s new radio that seeks to redefine a 20th-century technology for contemporary audiences.

Disegno #33 comes out in print on 6 June 2022, and is available to order now.
